“Apophenia” is a change in perception, whereby someone assigns a certain meaning to everyday events by making unmotivated connections between things. APPOFENIACS revolves around the disastrous and deadly consequences of the shenanigans of a jerk named Duke. Duke is obsessed with AI and deepfakes. He has developed an app that allows him to take revenge on all the people he dislikes or, for example, those who dare to talk back at him at the local coffee shop. He makes one person believe that his girlfriend is cheating on him with a fake video, puts racist comments in another person’s mouth… A picture, an app, and the damage is done… along with the ensuing carnage. In short, a PULP FICTION for the age of AI and fake news. Confucius already warned us ages ago: “Don’t believe a damn thing you see on social media.”
