If you like simple storylines, one-dimensional characters, and happy endings where everything falls neatly into place, then STEAL AWAY is not for you. The latest film by Canadian director Clement Virgo is set in an unspecified country and time. An African mother on the run arrives with her daughter Cécile at the opulent estate of Florence, the suspiciously friendly lady of the manor who is going to help the two women get their papers. From the outset, Fanny, the spoiled young lady who roams the rooms like Rumpelstiltskin, is fascinated by Cécile’s no-nonsense attitude. A dance of attraction, jealousy, and fascination develops between the two young women, who are opposites. But ultimately, they will need each other to resist the social pressures that threaten to destroy their personalities.
