Heavy metal pioneers Motörhead took the London scene by storm when they debuted in 1975. No one before them had played so fast and so hard. Their ramped-up concert style soon gave the trio from Ladbroke Grove cult status. Later, both Metallica and Iron Maiden would mention the band as one of their main influences. However, legendary songs like “Overkill,” “Bomber” and “Ace of Spades” would probably never have seen the light of day had Lemmy Kilmister’s path not crossed that of Lucas Fox during a booze-filled evening at a small London pub in Margaret Street.
At first glance, younger by seven years, and a former student at London’s Lycée Français, and the charismatic bassist of the space-rock band Hawkwind seem very different. But a shared passion for World War II, Tommy Cooper’s sense of humor, as well as a certain penchant for consuming amphetamines brought the two men together. They soon became inseparable. When Lemmy was kicked out of Hawkwind, it was Lucas Fox who helped him get back on his feet and laid the foundations of his new band with him.
