The 19th century. Mary Stevens, a young woman from New Zealand, travels from the other side of the world to an estate in Yorkshire in the hope to find out more about her Maori roots. With Marama, director Taratoa Stappard has created an extremely atmospheric gothic film. Colonization, closely guarded family secrets, and dark desires are gradually revealed against a backdrop of opulent salons, vast gardens, and stolen heirlooms from New Zealand. And Mary? She soon figures out that her host’s fascination with Māori culture hides something extremely unsavory.
