Retro South Korea

As you know, we had planned a vintage edition in the Passage 44. The pandemic’s nasty tail decided otherwise. But we would still want to mark the occasion by adding Hyun Seung-lee’s IL MARE to the program. Nothing but good memories from its 2001 projection at the Passage 44 and a heartwarming injection of romance and fantasy as an antidote to these trying times.

Director: Hyun-seung Lee
Cast: Lee Jung-jae, Jun Ji-Hyun, Mu-saeng Kim,…
Runtime: 96 min

And what about love in all this? Of all long-distance romance stories, it’s time to polish the dust of this one, a movie that rocked the Passage 44 during the BIFFF 2001. Don’t you remember? Of course you do! It’s that incredible relationship between Eun-joo and Sung-hyun and their time travelling letters. Sung-hyun buys a house by the sea, «Il Mare». He finds an abandoned Christmas card in the mailbox. It was written by Sung-hyun before she moved out. But the card is dated two years in the future. They realize that they live in different times and can communicating through the mailbox. In spite of everything, they will do whatever it takes to meet each other… A little jewel of fantastic sweetness which will get its Hollywood remake five years later with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock.
