At the beginning of the 16th century, King Christian II of Denmark and Norway has set his sights on Sweden. The Swedes themselves are not too keen on the idea, but after a slouch of bloody battles against not just the Danes but a whole host of German and Scottish mercenaries, they’re forced to capitulate and Christian crowns himself King of the Swedes in the Cathedral of Stockholm. The winner takes it aaaaall, a popular Swedish saying states, but Christian wants to bury the hatchet and grants amnesty to the losing side. Not everyone appreciates his gesture. Like collaborating Archbishop Gustav Trolle, who hasn’t quite gotten over his imprisonment in the Swedish dungeons and who now demands compensation. Oh, not with gold or Swedish crowns. No, he prefers a mass execution, a spectacle of collective beheadings on the town square. A massacre that would go down in history as the “Stockholm Bloodbath”…
As a beautiful revenge on history, Sweden and Denmark join forces 500 years later to produce this epic tale. At the helm is Mikael Håfström, whose EVIL was nominated for an Oscar. This expat has had quite some success at Hollywood, shooting with the likes of Stallone, Arnie, Jackie Chan and Anthony Hopkins. Now he briefly returns to his cradle for this mad, bloody epic full of references to Guy Ritchie, Tarantino and GAME OF THRONES!
