You liked SAW X? Child’s play compared to the trail of gruesome snuff videos this gang of ruthless, anonymous serial killers is leaving all across the dark web, joyfully chopping up their victims while doing quirky little dance moves… It’s like TikTok for psychos! Detective Choi Jae-hwan however, is not amused. Ever since his brother-in-law and fellow man on the force died at their hands, it’s gotten personal and now he’s getting his chance to catch their lunatic leader, Jin-hyuk. He chases him into the woods and an intense fight ensues but they both tumble down a ravine… and disappear. For a month. Just when the search team is about to give up, a car comes crashing into the police station, with Det. Choi and a handcuffed Jin-hyuk both unconscious in the front seats. That’s where your regular run-of-the-mill Korean thriller would end, but here it’s just the beginning. Because, you see, when Det. Choi regains consciousness and looks into the mirror, he’s staring right into the face of the killer he just caught… And the killer? Proudly parading as Det. Choi, in his body, getting praise by his colleagues and going home arm-in-arm with his wife and daughter! Things have just gotten even more personal…
Impossible not to think of FACE/OFF, though this doesn’t reach the coke-snorting Nic Cage-levels of insanity of that action extravaganza classic (seriously, what does?), settling instead for a darker, brooding mood. Rather than slitting off his face, this slivering killer – played by Dong-yoon Jang, who is starting to specialize in eerie villain roles after PROJECT WOLF HUNTING (BIFFF 2023) – prefers literally getting inside the head of his pursuer to torment him.
