The European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation
The European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation aims to promote European film and filmmaking;
With some 20 festivals represented, on the European continent as well as supporting members in Asia and North-America, and a joint audience of approximately 600.000 spectators, the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation (EFFFF) has become one of the most powerful tools to promote the originality and creativity of the European fantasy film industry.
Present in 16 countries, it has developed a tight network of festivals that allows films to reach foreign audiences more easily and offers them a potential visibility among the public, press and professionals that it cannot find in film markets.
With the objective of supporting European fantastic cinema artistically and economically, the EFFFF has created the Golden Méliès Competition for Best European Fantastic Film.
This unique competition, open to feature films and short films, is co-organised by all the European members of the Federation. The films selected in this competition are promoted at the major film markets and at each of the festivals.
In existence since 1996, the Méliès d’Or Award is a unique competition: it is the only competition organised between collaborating festivals in Europe. The competition is open to both features and short films.
The Méliès d’Or Competition for features is organised by all the affiliated members of the Federation. Each Competition cycle takes approximately one year and is organised in two stages.
In the first stage, each participating festival organises a Competition during its event, at the end of which a European film is awarded with a Méliès d’Argent. This film is automatically nominated to take part in the Méliès d’Or Competition.
Once all the affiliated members have awarded their own Méliès d’Argent, the next festival on the calendar organises the Méliès d’Or Competition and Ceremony. A jury is gathered, their task is to decide which of the Méliès d’Argent will be awarded with the Méliès d’Or.
The Méliès d’Or Competition for shorts is organised in the same way as the Competition for features, but is open to all the European members of the Federation. The films selected by each festival are called Méliès d’Argent. The Méliès d’Or for shorts is awarded by the same jury as for the features.
With the organisation of a Méliès d’Or competition, the Federation intends to highlight the quality and originality of European cinema and to guide the renewal of the genre film on the entire continent, whether in Spain, France, the Scandinavian countries, England,…
The European Federation of Fantastic Film Festivals also sees itself as a solid network of festivals, facilitating the circulation of films between its members. Today counting 22 members from 15 countries, each member functioning as a national antenna, the Federation aims to become an important, even essential, pole in the cultural and economic circuit of European fantastic film.
The 19th Méliès d’Or Ceremony will take place at Trieste or Sitges in October 2017
